What’s a Meta Description and Why Does It Matter for SEO? (Dutch)

April 8, 2025
A meta description is a short bit of text that shows up below the meta tag in Google’s search results. It’s kind of like your website’s shop window if it looks appealing, people are more likely to come in. A well-written meta description can grab attention and boost your chances of getting that click. But how do you make sure your HTML tag actually stands out?

What’s the Ideal Length for a Meta Description?

A meta description is the short piece of text that appears below the meta title in search results. It’s the first impression a visitor gets of your page, and it plays a big role in whether or not they decide to click. But how long should a good meta description actually be?

How Many Characters Should a Meta Description Have?

The optimal length for a meta description is between 150 and 160 characters. That’s long enough to get your message across, but short enough to avoid getting cut off by Google. Make sure to put the core of your message right at the beginning so it always shows up clearly.

Why Are Keywords Important in a Meta Description?

A strong meta description includes relevant keywords that match the user’s search intent. Google highlights these keywords in bold within the search results, which helps your snippet stand out. Just make sure to use them naturally—avoid keyword stuffing at all costs.

How Do You Find a Meta Description in the HTML?

A meta description is a short summary of what a webpage is about. You can write it yourself, or Google might generate one automatically based on your page’s content. The meta description isn’t visible on the webpage itself, but you’ll find it in the source code. Here’s how to locate it:

Right-click on the page and select “View Page Source.” You can also press CTRL + U.

Then press CTRL + F and search for meta description.

It’ll look something like this:

<meta name="description" content="this is the meta description" />

Is a Meta Description Important for SEO?

While Google doesn’t use meta descriptions directly as a ranking factor, a well-written one can still help your SEO. A higher click-through rate (CTR) sends a signal that your page is relevant, which can have a positive impact on your search performance.

How Do You Add a Meta Description in WordPress and Magento?

Meta description Wordpress

WordPress

To add a solid meta description in WordPress, we recommend installing an SEO plugin. One of the most popular options is Yoast, an all-in-one SEO plugin. Here’s how you can add a meta description using Yoast:

Once you’ve installed and activated the Yoast plugin, scroll down below your WYSIWYG editor when editing a page or post.

There, you’ll see a field labeled “Meta description” or a button that says Edit snippet — click that.

The input field for your meta description should be empty, allowing you to write your own SEO-optimized text.

Magento

  • Magento works a little differently than WordPress. In Magento, you can add a meta description to your product pages, category pages, and CMS pages. Just follow these steps:
  • For a product page, category page, or landing page:
  • Log in to your Magento admin panel.
  • In the left menu, go to Catalog and select Products or Categories.
  • If you're working on a landing page, go to Content and select Pages under Page Management.
  • Find the product, category, or page you want to edit, then click on it.
  • Scroll down to the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) section.
  • In the Meta Description field, enter your custom description.
  • Make sure the description is relevant to the product and includes important keywords—just don’t overdo it.
  • Click Save to apply your changes.

What Results Can a Meta Description Deliver?

A strong meta description can be the difference between a click and a missed opportunity. While it’s not a direct ranking factor, it does influence your click-through rate (CTR), which plays a big role in the success of a page. A compelling meta description grabs attention in the search results and encourages users to click through. This not only drives more traffic to your site, but it can also help improve your position on Google.

An optimized meta description helps your content stand out from the competition and appear more relevant—both to search engines and users. That said, Google can also rewrite meta descriptions based on the content of your page. Some tests have even been done where the original meta description was removed to let Google generate its own.

The result? Google’s auto-generated descriptions often better match user queries and can have a noticeable impact on organic traffic due to higher CTRs.

According to research by Searchpilot, these tests showed positive results—specifically, an estimated 4.2% increase in monthly organic conversions. This improvement likely comes from Google’s rewritten descriptions being more in tune with what users are actually searching for.
