Why European unicorns, and why AI visibility matters now

Europe's unicorns represent the continent's most ambitious technology companies. Valued at over $1 billion each, they are the clearest signal of where innovation, capital and market demand converge. Many of today's unicorns will become tomorrow's listed corporations, industry leaders and household names. Understanding how they are positioned in the digital landscape is not just a snapshot of the present: it is a preview of Europe's economic future.

At the same time, the way people search for information is undergoing a structural shift. Conversational AI platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot) are rapidly becoming a parallel search channel alongside Google. When a user asks an AI assistant to recommend a fintech, compare insurance providers or explain a SaaS tool, the brands that appear in that response gain visibility that traditional search results cannot replicate: a direct, contextualised recommendation from a trusted source.

Yet most companies, including Europe's most valuable, don't seem to have a strategy for this new channel yet. They optimise for Google rankings but might not be aware whether ChatGPT or Perplexity even mention their brand. This study is a first step in understanding the relationship between traditional SEO performance and this emerging AI visibility. By analysing 147 unicorns across 12 European markets, we set out to answer a simple question: do strong SEO metrics translate into presence on LLMs?

Organic rankings strongly correlate with AI visibility

To measure whether companies that rank well on Google also tend to appear more in AI-generated answers, we applied Spearman rank correlation across 147 European unicorns in 12 markets. We looked at three signals that reflect a company's organic search presence: how authoritative its domain is, how much traffic it receives from Google, and how many keywords it ranks for. We then tested how closely each of these correlates with the number of times that company gets mentioned by AI platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot. A score close to +1 means the two metrics move together consistently; close to 0 means there is little to no relationship.

Platform classification

AI Overview is a Google search feature, not a standalone LLM. We use 'AI platforms' as an umbrella term throughout.

How we measured this: Spearman correlation

We used the Spearman rank correlation coefficient (ρ) because it works on ranks rather than raw values, making it robust to the highly skewed distributions in our data (from companies with millions of keywords to others with fewer than 10). ρ ranges from -1 to +1: close to +1 means the two metrics move together, close to 0 means no relationship, and negative values indicate an inverse relationship.

Interpretation thresholds used in this study:
ρ < 0.30: weak or no correlation
0.30 ≤ ρ < 0.50: moderate correlation
0.50 ≤ ρ < 0.70: strong correlation
ρ ≥ 0.70: very strong correlation

With n=147, any ρ ≥ 0.50 is statistically significant at p < 0.001 (less than 1 in 1,000 probability of being due to chance). For smaller country samples (PT, AT, CH with n < 5), correlations are shown but should be considered indicative only.

Methodology

Spearman ρ across 147 unicorns, 12 countries. All ρ ≥ 0.50 significant at p < 0.001. Data: Ahrefs + Ahrefs AI Citations, June 2026. This study measures correlations, not causality. For n<5 (PT, AT, CH), correlations are indicative only.

Idealista dominates overwhelmingly

With 26,900 total AI citations, Idealista exceeds the runner-up (Wallapop, 5,606) by nearly 5x. Its combination of 192K organic keywords and 6M traffic is associated with the highest AI presence in the entire study across all 12 countries.

Typeform: Spain's great paradox

The unicorn with the highest DR in the entire sample (93) registers just 9 AI citations. With only 298 organic keywords (traffic concentrated on its SaaS tool), it is virtually invisible to AI platforms despite its massive domain authority. A textbook case of why DR alone does not predict AI visibility.

Spain: the most AI Overview-dependent market

Spain shows the highest dependence on AI Overview of all 12 markets analysed (53% of total citations). This means AI visibility strategy in Spain should prioritise optimisation for Google AI Overview results, since ChatGPT and Perplexity carry far less weight. Wallapop is the sole exception: its presence is stronger on Perplexity (3,000) than AI Overview (691), likely due to its marketplace nature with massive listing content.

Perfect correlation: KW ranking = AI ranking

Italy shows a perfect correlation (ρ=1.00) between organic keywords and AI citations: the keyword ranking and the citation ranking are identical. However, DR is completely irrelevant (ρ=0.09). This is the strongest evidence in the study that keyword breadth, not domain authority, is associated with AI visibility.

Prima.it: low DR, maximum visibility

With a DR of just 56, Prima.it leads Italy with 2,555 AI citations thanks to 8,600 organic keywords and 565K traffic. Its insurance and comparison content ranks for thousands of informational queries that AI platforms appear to use as sources.

Gemini registers zero citations

No Italian unicorn has a single Gemini citation. Combined with the 89% dependence on AI Overview, the Italian market is highly concentrated on a single platform, creating vulnerability to any changes in Google's AI strategy.

Bending Spoons: brand recognition ≠ AI visibility

Despite being one of Italy's best-known tech companies, Bending Spoons has only 4 AI citations with just 75 organic keywords. Brand awareness alone, without organic content breadth, does not appear to drive AI platform presence.

AI Overview is not available in France

Google has not deployed AI Overview in France due to a regulatory block linked to the 2019 neighbouring rights law, which requires payment to press publishers for content reuse. In March 2024, Google was fined €250M for using French press content to train Gemini without prior agreement. As a result, French AI citations concentrate on ChatGPT (44%), Copilot (27%) and Perplexity (29%).

The Doctolib anomaly: functional traffic ≠ AI visibility

France's largest unicorn (8.8M traffic, 241K keywords, DR 91) registers only 163 AI citations. Its traffic comes from transactional functionality (medical appointments), not informational content that AI platforms can cite. This demonstrates that not all organic rankings carry the same value: AI platforms need authoritative informational sources, not functional pages.

ManoMano: the French leader

With 10,000 AI citations and 225K organic keywords, ManoMano leads France by a wide margin. Its DIY marketplace generates massive product and guide content that AI platforms cite extensively, especially ChatGPT (4,300) and Copilot (3,700). A clear example of how content breadth drives AI visibility.

The biggest graveyard of high DR

France concentrates the most extreme cases of high DR with minimal AI visibility: EcoVadis (DR 88, 1 citation), Brevo (DR 92, 46 citations), Mistral AI (DR 86, 4 citations). The company behind one of the most prominent LLMs is barely cited by competing AI platforms.

Note on French data

The absence of AI Overview is confirmed (regulatory block). However, the near-total absence of Gemini (which does operate in France) and the relatively high Copilot volumes deserve further verification with alternative tracking tools.

Virtually invisible to AI platforms

Portugal's 4 unicorns total just 26 AI citations, all on AI Overview. Zero on ChatGPT, zero on Perplexity, zero on Gemini, zero on Copilot. It is the market with the lowest AI penetration in Europe, with an average of just 6.5 citations per company.

Global companies, no local organic presence

With an average of 67 organic keywords (vs 13,700 European average), Portuguese unicorns have minimal local organic footprint. These are global tech companies (Sword Health is worth $4.15B) operating in English with almost no Portuguese-language content. OutSystems leads with just 21 citations from 223 keywords.

An empty competitive field

For the Portuguese market, the opportunity is enormous. A combined strategy of local link building and citable Portuguese-language content would find virtually zero competition in AI platform visibility. The first movers here will own the AI conversation in Portugal.

The most diversified market in Europe

The UK is the only market where all five AI platforms have significant presence. AI Overview leads with 70%, but ChatGPT (11%), Perplexity (8%), Gemini (8%) and Copilot (3%) all participate meaningfully. This requires a multi-platform strategy that no other European market demands.

Motorway: the big surprise

With a DR of only 64, Motorway accumulates 4,212 AI citations (2nd highest in the UK). Its car marketplace generates massive content that all five AI platforms cite. Especially strong on ChatGPT (1,300) and Perplexity (718). Proof that content breadth can outperform domain authority.

Neobanks dominate the AI conversation

Revolut (5,427), Starling Bank (3,492) and Monzo (3,253) hold 3 of the top 5 spots. Neobanks combine educational content (financial guides, comparisons) with strong authority profiles that rank organically. The data suggests this combination is associated with the highest AI citation rates in the study.

Blockchain.com: high DR, low AI visibility

Despite DR 88 and 118K traffic, it registers only 71 AI citations. Its traffic is concentrated on tools (blockchain explorer), not informational content. Similar to the Doctolib case in France: functional traffic does not appear to translate into AI platform visibility.

DR is completely irrelevant here

The Netherlands shows the starkest disconnect between DR and AI visibility in the entire study (ρ=-0.12). Mollie (DR 90) has only 312 citations, while bunq (DR 75) has 519. The data strongly suggests that domain authority, by itself, has no predictive value for AI visibility in this market.

Keywords remain the strongest signal

Despite DR being irrelevant, organic keywords still correlate strongly with AI citations (ρ=0.85). The pattern is consistent: it is the breadth of ranked content, not the backlink profile, that is associated with AI platform presence.

Gemini registers zero citations

No German unicorn has a single Gemini citation, despite Germany being one of Europe's largest digital markets. This pattern of Gemini absence repeats across most of continental Europe, suggesting limited indexation outside English-speaking markets.

Enpal: sector content beats domain authority

Enpal (DR 67, solar energy) accumulates 3,045 AI citations with a modest DR but 13,000 organic keywords about solar energy. A clear case where deep, sector-specific content that is well-positioned organically outperforms higher domain authority with less content breadth.

What this study doesn't cover

Correlation ≠ causation

Strong correlations do not prove causality. Brand awareness, domain age, or media coverage could influence both metrics.

Keyword intent segmentation

A next step: segment by intent (informational, transactional, navigational). Hypothesis: informational KWs correlate most strongly.

Tracking tool limitations

All data from Ahrefs AI Citations (single source). Gemini absence in France and other anomalies need cross-verification.

Sample size

PT (4), AT (3), CH (4) are too small for robust generalisation. Unicorns ≠ broader business landscape.

Conclusions

The data suggests that AI platform visibility does not depend on a single metric, but is associated with a chain: quality links contribute to organic rankings, organic rankings drive keyword positions, and those keyword positions appear to be what AI platforms use as a signal to cite and recommend brands. Across 147 unicorns in 12 European markets, the pattern holds with remarkable consistency.

  • Links remain relevant, but their value flows through keywords. Domain Rating alone shows only moderate correlation with AI visibility (ρ=0.43), while organic keywords show a near-perfect correlation (ρ=0.93). This doesn't mean backlinks are irrelevant: it means their value is realised when they help content rank organically. The chain is consistent across markets: quality links contribute to better rankings, better rankings produce more positioned keywords, and more positioned keywords appear to be the strongest signal AI platforms use to cite brands.
  • Generic content is no longer enough. In an environment where AI answers user queries directly, replicable, surface-level content loses value. The data shows that AI platforms tend to cite authoritative sources: proprietary data, original studies, expert content, sector-specific guides. Cases like Personio (HR), Enpal (solar energy) or Prima.it (insurance) suggest that deep, sector-specific content backed by domain authority is what gets cited. Content needs to be paired with an authority strategy to be effective.
  • Strategy must be local. Each country shows a different dominant AI platform: AI Overview dominates in Spain (53%), Italy (89%) and the UK (70%), but it is completely absent in France due to a regulatory block (the 2019 neighbouring rights law and the €250M Google fine in March 2024). Gemini registers zero citations across most of continental Europe (DE, IT, AT, DK), while ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot pick up the slack in markets where AI Overview is weak. A single, pan-European AI visibility strategy will inevitably miss key channels in specific markets. Link building, content and platform prioritisation must be adapted to each country.
  • Functional traffic does not translate into AI visibility. Several high-DR, high-traffic unicorns show minimal AI citations: Doctolib (8.8M traffic, DR 91, only 163 citations), Blockchain.com (118K traffic, DR 88, 71 citations), Typeform (DR 93, 9 citations). The common factor: their traffic comes from transactional or tool-based functionality, not informational content. AI platforms appear to cite sources that explain, compare or educate, not pages that simply transact. For brands whose product is a tool, this means investing separately in citable, informational content layers.
  • The 12% invisibility represents an open competitive field. Across 147 European unicorns, 18 (12%) have zero citations on any AI platform. These are not small or unknown companies: they include Voodoo, Tractable, Mambu, Shift Technology and others valued in the billions. For markets like Portugal, Switzerland and Austria, where the average is just 2 to 6 AI citations per company, the opportunity is even larger: the first brands to invest in local link building and citable content will own the AI conversation in those markets before competitors notice the channel exists.
